The Sex Industry in Peru

Prostitution in Peru is legal and regulated. UNAIDS estimates there are around 67,000 prostitutes in the country. The sex industry is quite visible, with red-light districts, brothels, and sex shops operating openly in cities like Lima.

The Harsh Reality

However, the reality behind this industry is often harsh. Many women and children are forced into prostitution, and human trafficking remains a serious issue. In recent years, there have been efforts to address these problems. For example, in 2018, Peruvian authorities dismantled a sex trafficking ring operating in illegal mining areas.

Efforts to Combat Trafficking

Despite these efforts, prostitution, especially among children, continues to be a concern. Reports from the Peruvian Amazon highlight the booming child prostitution trade, often linked to poverty and exploitation.

Legal Framework and Challenges

The legal framework surrounding prostitution in Peru allows for regulated brothels, but it does little to protect those forced into the industry. Many women and children are lured into prostitution with false promises of work or a better life. Once in the trade, they often face mistreatment and exploitation.

Ongoing Initiatives

Efforts to combat trafficking and support victims are ongoing. Organizations and authorities are working to rescue victims and prosecute traffickers. However, the problem remains widespread, and more needs to be done to address the root causes of exploitation and protect vulnerable populations.
